2012

The New Year started with a blustery day at the Red Jet terminal...winds of 50 knots plus meant a six hour wait until we could get over to the Island. Ironically, our meteorology session had to be cancelled due to the bad weather! Once we got over though, I had some fun driving the Academy's van, as it's left-hand drive and pretty big.

Luckily on Wednesday Neil, the psychologist, made it over to the I.O.W. despite the winds picking up again. With Neil we learnt about anxiety management (which involved a game of Jenga and some chocolate treats) and revised our goals for the season. Once again Goalscape (www.goalscape.com) came to the fore as the perfect planning and management tool; my New Year's resolution will be to keep it updated!
At the end of the day, we were all treated to a great meal at the B&B. Expecting a hard session with Pete the physiologist the next day, I got through plenty of leeks, braised celery and some home-made chocolates.

Our session with Pete was in Chichester, where the RYA have set-up a gym. This was a really useful morning, as we were taught how to lift weights properly. Despite being shown the correct technique, I don't think I'll be embarking on a career as a body builder... the bar alone weighed something like 30kg!

Risking a large lunch, the afternoon bought about some rowing tests, to measure our blood lactate levels. I was a bit worried when Sam G appeared with blood down his t-shirt, and came across a big yellow box of discarded needles...luckily the test wasn't that bad at all, as we were only working up to 75% of max, with few pricks of the finger in-between! From the results Pete will be able to work out some good individual gym programmes, so that we can get the right balance between aerobic and strength training.

To finish off the week, we had a trip to the London Boat Show. I listened to some great talks from Mike Golding, Andrew Simpson and Iain Percy, and had a look around a steel canal boat! I also talked to plenty of companies, who will hopefully be able to help with my Commodore's Cup campaign with the British Keelboat Academy. In the evening there was a great turn-out at the Musto stand, for a meet-and-greet with those interested in finding out more about the Offshore Academy and the great new kit that Musto have been developing.
